Postcard from Cardinals camp, Sunday, Feb. 19
Feb 19th, 2012 | By Rob Rains | Category: StLSportsPageWeather: Mostly sunny, 85 degrees (close to a record high)
Highs: Watching Adam Wainwright pitching off the mound as well as Chris Carpenter, and both reporting they felt good afterward.
Lows: Wainwright leaving after the workout to go play golf while the media had to stay behind and continue working.
In the clubhouse: Catcher Yadier Molina, eligible for free agency at the end of the season, told the media he has broken off talks about a contract extension with the Cardinals, “For now, I don’t want to talk about it,” said Molina, but he did add that he was open to resuming negotiations at some point in the future and that he is still hopeful an agreement can be reached that will keep him in St. Louis. “They know I’m open to talking,” he said.
Off the field: Non-roster pitcher Jordan Swagerty and third base prospect Zack Cox went fishing after Saturday’s unofficial workout, spending an hour trying to catch bass in a small pond. Neither caught a fish. “I thought I was a good fisherman until yesterday,” Cox said. “We were out there for about an hour, maybe a little longer, with no luck. Then we got hungry so we left.” Cox said the duo does plan on another outing, but maybe to a different spot. “It’s kind of hitting my pride a little bit, “ he said. “I have to catch at least one. Last year when we played here we went out and caught several.”
Quote of the day: One of the changes in camp this year, on the bottom of the day’s schedule, is a quote selected by manager Mike Matheny. The quote Sunday for the first official workout of the spring was from former President George Bush: “From now on any definition of a successful life, has to include serving others.”
