- Tyler Lyons allowed just one run over seven innings in winning his major-league debut for the Cardinals Wednesday night, 5-3 over the Padres in San Diego. Yadier Molina had four of the team's 14 hits. The Cardinals have today off, then will play this weekend in Los Angeles.
- To make room on the active roster for Lyons, the Cardinals placed pitcher Fernando Salas on the 15-day disabled list.
- Jaime Garcia learned he is headed for season-ending shoulder surgery as a result of a visit to Dr. James Andrews' office on Wednesday. The Cardinals' left-hander, who has battled pain in his shoulder since last season, has a 30-40 percent tear in the labrum in his left shoulder according to Dr. Andrews.
