- The Rams released rookie defensive end Michael Sam on Saturday, one of 22 players cut as the team reduced its roster to the 53-man regular-season limit. Coach Jeff Fisher said the move was "a football decision" and he is convinced Sam can play in the NFL.
- Marcus Murphy returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown as the 24th-ranked Missouri Tigers opened their season with a 38-18 victory over South Dakota State Saturday in Columbia.
- Matt Holliday hit two home runs and drove in five runs to lead the Cardinals to a 13-2 win over the Cubs in the second half of their day-night doubleheader Saturday at Busch Stadium, snapping a four-game losing streak. The Cardinals scored a season high nine runs in the eighth inning. In the day game, the Cubs hit three homers and beat Justin Masterson and the Cardinals 5-1.
- John Lackey will pitch the series finale today while the Cubs will start Travis Wood.
