Lindbergh’s Michael Slyman wins second State Wrestling Championship; plus other area State Champs
Feb 20th, 2012 | By Compiled by Staff | Category: LOCAL COLLEGE/OTHER LOCAL(Compiled by Staff) — Lindbergh High School’s Michael Slyman, took first in State –for the second year in a row — at the Missouri State High School Athletic Association’s (MSHSAA) wrestling tournament held at the Mizzou Arena over the weekend.
Like father, like son, Slyman’s father was among Lindbergh High School’s best wrestlers and now that his son, who wrestles in the 160 weight class, is doing so well, the dad could not be happier for the son.
The younger Michael Slyman is only the second wrestler in Lindbergh history to place first in State twice according to the Lindbergh Wrestling website. Slyman beat Drew Daniels of Rockhurst High, 5-2. The last time a Lindbergh wrestler won back-to-back titles was in 1964 and ‘65 with Rick Thompson. Slyman’s dad, Mike Slyman, the athletic director at Lindbergh and former wrestler for Mizzou, was a State Champion in 1974 after placing second in ’73 and dominating in wrestling during that time.
“My dad took fifth his sophomore year, second his junior year and first his senior year,” Michael Slyman told TheStLSportsPage.com. “I plan to go to Mizzou, but havent made any permanent plans yet.”
He has several schools who want him so if he does got to Missouri they will be lucky.
This season, Michael Slyman went 44-0 and was one of only five wrestlers in the state to enter the State Wrestling Competition undefeated on the season. Here’s an amazing stat on Slyman: he did not have one take-down scored against him the entire season.
“Yes, that’s right, I had no offensive points scored on me all year,” he said. “I did that by doing my best to stay in great position and I was very defensive.”
At seven years old, Slyman won the first of three eventual AAU state championships and it’s been uphill ever since.
“Wrestling runs in the family,” Slyman told B.J. Rains for a previous article. “All of my uncles were wrestlers and they were pretty successful at it. I’ve been wrestling since I was 4 years old, so for like a good 13 years. It’s what I love to do.”
