Missouri Baptist University
JACKSON, Tenn. - Missouri Baptist baseball failed to get timely hits on Saturday against Union University as the team dropped two, one-run games 6-5 and 4-3 respectively.
Game one began early as inclement weather was expected later in the day. The Spartans maintained their composure after a Union four-run, fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead. Missouri Baptist rallied in the seventh thanks to a one-out double by catcher, Todd Glime, to start things off.
After Patrick Johnson came up with an RBI single, it was Kyle Turner’s turn. The Spartan center fielder singled up the middle, but a wild throw by the Bulldog third basemen, Cole McAdams, allowed two more Spartans to cross the plate to give Missouri Baptist the lead, 5-4.
Union went into the bottom-half of the seventh looking for a key hit and got it. After a walk was surrendered to Kody Pinson, Wacey Russell came in to pinch run and provided a big play. Russell stole second and scored off an RBI double by Union designated hitter, Will Irvin. Soon after, it was Irvin who proved to be the winning run after scoring on an R.J. Rayborn groundout to first.
Game two was more of the same for Missouri Baptist. Starter David Williams got the ball and gave up three earned runs in four innings while striking out five batters.
Missouri Baptist struck first blood in the first thanks to an RBI single off the bat of first baseman, Scott Krutel, to give the team a 1-0 lead. Union put one on the board in the second to tie it, but it was short-lived. The Spartans scored again in the third to go on top by a run. This lead, however, was the last that the team would enjoy on the afternoon.
The Bulldogs posted two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to give themselves a two run lead. MBU again attempted a late-game rally, but came up just short. Kyle Turner switched around to bat lefty and singled in the top half of the sixth. Then, seemingly attempting to win the game by himself, stole second and third on concurrent plays. Scott Krutel came to the plate with one out and grounded out to first, but Turner scored on the play to bring the Spartans to within one.
With two outs and Kyle Hardy on first, Yeriel Nieves grounded out to short to end the game and the Spartan rally.
Missouri Baptist will try to shake off a rocky start to the season next week as the team will travel to Bethel University for four games on Friday and Saturday.
