Postcard from Cardinals camp, Tuesday, Feb. 21

Feb 21st, 2012 | By | Category: Rob Rains StLSportsPage

Weather: Mostly sunny, 75 degrees

Highs: The arrival of starters Matt Holliday, David Freese and Jon Jay in camp, all of whom worked out for the first time, taking their first turns of batting practice for the spring on one of the back fields at Roger Dean Stadium.

Lows: Pitchers Lance Lynn and Jordan Swagerty missed their second bullpen session because of minor injuries. Lynn had a tight left hamstring and Swagerty was dealing with a sore arm, but manager Mike Matheny said both should be able to throw on Wednesday.

In the clubhouse:  In addition to having veteran pitchers paired up in groups with some of the youngsters in camp, Matheny went another step farther on Tuesday and made certain each pitcher who was throwing his second bullpen session was paired with a different catcher than he had thrown to on Sunday. He switched off regular Yadier Molina, having him catch 19-year-old prospect Tyrell Jenkins, while Adam Wainwright threw to Cody Stanley, the catcher at Quad Cities last year, and Carpenter threw to non-roster catcher Koyle Hill. “I think this is the right concept,” Matheny said. “It’s a valuable learning experience for a catcher to see different pitchers.” Stanley was almost in awe when he found out he was paired with Wainwright. “It was an unbelievable experience,” he said. “There are so many things I can learn from him.”

Off the field:  Jon Jay was a student at the University of Miami when Frank Haith was the head basketball coach there, and Jay was one of the few people who was not concerned when Haith was hired as the new coach at Missouri last year. Haith has guided the Tigers to a third-place ranking in the national polls and a possible number one seed in the upcoming NCAA tournament. Jay said Tuesday he was glad his faith in Haith had been rewarded. “I saw how he improved the situation at Miami,” Jay said. “I knew he would do a good job at Missouri. All the interviews when he was hired had everybody freaking out, but I knew he was a good coach.” Speaking of basketball in Miami, Jay said he had told teammates that he had no connections to get tickets for the Knicks-Heat game on Thursday night, a game Matt Holliday wants to attend so he can see phenom Jeremy Lin in action. “I hope he can get some and invites me,” Jay said.

Quote of the day: Matheny’s official quote on the day’s practice schedule was from Aristotle, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” Matheny also delivered a great line to reporters, however, when he talked about building relationships with his new players before he began to criticize them. “They’ve got to know that you care before they care about what you say,” he said.
